Making Democracy Work

Educational Forums

The Cortland LWV conducts forums to educate our community on policy issues. If the U.S. LWV and the New York State LWV have no position on a local issue, local leagues study an issue before deciding whether to take a position.

Archives of the Cortland LWV are housed at the Cortland County Historical Society, 25 Homer Ave, Cortland NY 13045 (607-756-6071).

Should the City of Cortland Fluoridate Municipal Water?

In 2016, the City of Cortland considered whether to fluoridate the municipal water supply. The Cortland LWV facilitated planning of an educational forum on the Health Impact of Municipal Water Fluoridation and moderated the forum on September 8, 2016. The US LWV, NYS LWV, and Cortland LWV have no position on this issue.

The planning committee provided background statistics on Oral Health needs in Cortland County and a set of questions for speakers to address. See details in the forum introduction:

Health Effects of Fluoridation - Forum Introduction

Presentations for and against fluoridation of municipal water are available here, in alphabetical order by speaker's last name:
