OCTOBER 22 Vote Smart National Tour -- Facts Matter

Video of this event is available on our Facebook page:

Monday, October 22 at 12 PM - 1:15 PM

United Presbyterian Church 25 Church St, Cortland, New York 13045

"Vote Smart would make the founding fathers weep with joy" according to U.S. News and World Report. Vote Smart's mission is to provide free, factual, unbiased information on candidates and elected officials to all Americans. It is a nonpartisan organization born of an idea started by Presidents Carter and Ford, It takes no money from special interests.

The League of Women Voters of Cortland and Tompkins Counties and the Cortland YWCA are sponsoring a one hour program by Vote Smart co-founder, Richard Kimball on how to be a more informed voter in the upcoming election. It will be held in Cortland on Oct 22 at Noon at the United Presbyterian Church at 25 Church St. Cortland NY.

This FACTS MATTER TOUR, is a 50-minute, four-part, multimedia presentation:
1. The Founders' fear of ignorance should they cast power out to the people.
2. Entertaining but dangerous political commercials and how they manipulate people emotionally instead of informing them intellectually.
3. The people's acceptance of lies, and their crumbling right to the facts.
4. Demonstrations on how to defend your right to the facts, the truth and the reality that our democracy is so dependent upon.

Good U.S. government depends on citizens having the facts. Yet 80% of the contributions to support candidates are now used to trash any opponent. Studies show that many people get their information from sources such as these ads, and "the media that peddle conspiracy theories and manipulative hateful nonsense," according to Kimball.

He also says, "Ironically, Vote Smart's immensely deep and rich data our thousands of students, staff and volunteers collect on U.S. politicians is mostly used by the government of China. It is a sad commentary that such would be so. But we have no advertising budget, few Americans know we exist and if members of the media don't tell citizens we exist, China, Google, Bing and the U.S. Dept. of Defense will be the only ones using what was built with the intent to help voters access the facts."

Kimball is coming to Cortland to share the story of Vote Smart. After graduating as a political science major from the University of Arizona, Kimball served Congressman Morris, Walther Mondale and Daniel Moynihan. He than ran against and lost to John McCain for US Senator. McCain, however, joined the Vote Smart Board of Directors because he believed that democracy only works with an informed citizenry.

Vote Smart has powerful on-line systems designed to give each voter the facts by exposing them to an enormous database collected on thousands of politicians. Vote Smart also publicizes a soft cover Voter's Self-Defense Manuals showing an excellent sample of these data. It is all free to all citizens at or by simply calling 1-800-VoteSmart. Vote Smart--get the facts.
